Modifications:

To get a stable reception the capacitors of the power supply should be checked, also the pcb's shlould be checked.
The tuner cannot be set to 240 Volt in Europe so consequently some transformers will burn in time: mine did, its easely replaced by a 12 V transformer.
The pcb is an Alpine cheap board and the soldering machine of Alpine was setup badly resulting in bad soldered bords and consequently intermitting contacts.
The 78M12 in the power supply section should be checked for bad contacts as it gets hot and heatsinking should be checked: add some heatsinking compound.

The FM front-end and the MF, together with the AM section, and the FM discriminator. ^ The high lighted sections should be checked for bad soldered contacts. ^

Sound:

The sound and reception quality is ok.

This is an ideal tuner when you do not have an antenna on your roof or any other personal antenna solution, but have to use the cable connection of your local tv signal provider.
